Request a second opinion

Kidney surgery is a significant decision. A second opinion can clarify the options, confirm the diagnosis, and reassure patients about the recommended approach.

When a second opinion can help

Second opinions are particularly useful when a diagnosis is uncertain, when radical surgery (such as complete removal of a kidney) has been proposed, or when patients simply want to feel confident before proceeding. Dr Kooner routinely reviews kidney imaging, biopsy results and multidisciplinary recommendations.

What to send in advance

  • Recent imaging (CT, MRI or ultrasound) on disc or via link.
  • Any biopsy or pathology reports.
  • A GP or specialist referral letter (for Medicare rebate eligibility).
  • A brief summary of what has been recommended so far.

How to arrange a review

Please contact Dr Kooner's rooms by phone or email to organise an appointment. Reviews can be in person at St Vincent's Private, the Mater Hospital North Sydney or Bowral.

Who benefits most from a second opinion?

Newly diagnosed kidney cancer

Small kidney masses, complex tumours, or borderline cases where the choice between partial and radical nephrectomy is not clear-cut.

Proposed radical surgery

Where removal of a whole kidney (radical nephrectomy) has been recommended and you want to know whether partial (kidney-sparing) surgery is feasible.

Complex stone disease

Large or multiple stones, recurrent stone formers, or situations where several procedures have been proposed.

Uncertainty about the diagnosis

Cystic lesions, indeterminate imaging findings, or biopsy results that warrant a second specialist view.

The second-opinion pathway

  1. Get in touch

Phone or email the rooms and ask specifically for a second-opinion review. Let the staff know the diagnosis and any time pressures.

  2. Send your information

Provide imaging, pathology, and a referral letter in advance so Dr Kooner can prepare before your appointment.

  3. Consultation & review

In-person review of your imaging and history. Dr Kooner discusses the options, the evidence, and his recommendation.

  4. Written summary

A letter is sent back to your GP and referring specialist summarising the opinion and any suggested next steps.

What to send - checklist

  • GP or specialist referral letter (required for Medicare rebate eligibility).
  • Most recent kidney imaging (CT, MRI, or ultrasound) - on disc or via a secure link.
  • Any relevant biopsy or pathology reports.
  • A short written summary of what has already been recommended.
  • Recent blood tests if available (kidney function, full blood count).
  • A list of current medications and relevant medical history.

If you are unsure what to send, the rooms can guide you when you call.
