Contributions to the urological literature on kidney cancer, kidney stones, and minimally invasive surgery.
Senior Sydney urologist with a longstanding interest in kidney disease, kidney stones, kidney cancer and robotic surgery and kidney-preserving care.
Dr Raji Kooner is a consultant urological surgeon based in Sydney, with a particular interest in kidney disease - kidney cancer, kidney stones, and reconstructive kidney surgery. He was among the first surgeons in Australia to perform laparoscopic (keyhole) removal of kidney tumours, as well being one of the first to use the robotic platform for kidney cancer surgery (partial and radical nephrectomy).
He was also an early adopter being one of the first surgeons in Australia to perform flexible ureteroscopy (pyleoplasty) and laser, specifically using the high powered holmium laser
Across his career, Dr Kooner has performed more than three thousand robotic procedures and continues to contribute to the training of junior urologists and the evaluation of emerging surgical techniques.
The emphasis at Kidney Surgery Sydney is on preserving healthy kidney tissue wherever possible. Current evidence supports partial nephrectomy - removing only the tumour rather than the entire kidney - in appropriately selected patients, with equivalent cancer outcomes and a lower long-term risk of kidney failure.
For stones, the goal is complete clearance rather than fragmentation alone, using flexible ureteroscopy with Holmium laser, lithotripsy or percutaneous (PCNL) surgery depending on the size and location of the stone.
Completed advanced surgical training and accreditation as a specialist urologist.
